Celebrating our key achievements 2024-25

Demonstrating the impact it has made over the past year, the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Manchester Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) has today published a summary of its key outcomes, outputs and progress.

Manchester BRC transforms scientific breakthroughs into diagnostic tests and life-saving treatments for patients. 

Awarded more than £64.1 million for 2022-28, Manchester BRC brings together world-leading researchers based at The University of Manchester and 6 NHS Trusts: Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust, Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust.

The Annual Report Summary 2024/25 showcases the positive impact it has made across Greater Manchester, Lancashire and South Cumbria and is now available as a downloadable PDF and on the Manchester BRC website.

Four impact case studies provide examples of how Manchester BRC is delivering lasting change for all through creative, inclusive, and proactive research: 

  • NICE utilise study data in improved joint national guideline for the diagnosis of asthma 
  • Transforming the care and outcomes for people with inherited eye diseases 
  • Less is more: Shorter radiotherapy treatment improves outcomes for bladder cancer treatments    
  • Let’s Talk Labs – a collaboration exploring laboratory-based research and the difference it makes 

Professor Anne Barton, Director of Manchester BRC, introduces the new Annual Report Summary 2024/25.
